Finding cracks in your fiberglass shower pan is more common than you think. There isn’t a week that goes by that we don’t get at least one call regarding fiberglass shower pan cracks.
The main cause for these cracks is poor installation. Some installers do not put the correct amount of support under the pan. We have seen pans supported only in the corners to just relying on the drain to reinforce not only the pan securely, but constant flow of water along with a human body. The lack of correct groundwork causes the fiberglass shower pan to flew and bow when weight is applied. Over a matter of months, cracks will slowly appear. Most common areas are around the drain, locations in the pan where the flex is the most drastic and/or where the supporting edge ends. The good news, instead of spending thousands to to get it pulled out, remove the surround, re-support and install a new shower pan; there is a good chance it can be repaired!! The second most common reason for cracks in a fiberglass shower pan is aging. On average, a fiberglass will last about 15-20 years before you’ll see signs of dryrot. Multiple spider, hair-line cracks will slowly appear in multiple areas, there will usually be minimum to no flex in these areas still. You need to tentative plan on replacing the shower pan in the next couple years. Getting the shower pan refinished can extend that time frame, by a few more years before it would need to be replaced.
